MOOC ---- As defined on the Ofcom website: Amateur radio, sometimes known as ham radio, is both a hobby and a service that uses various- types of radio equipment allowing communication with other radio amateurs for the purpose of self-training, recreation and public service. Although much of our "self-training" naturally occurs when building and maintaining our equipment or when we communicate with other amateurs, it occurred to me that occasionally there is a need for more formal training. Local Colleges occasionally offer courses for Amateur radio Electronics, or computing. And indeed, our own Radio club (along with other local clubs) offer training by way of planned talks by members, visiting volunteers, and simply from discussions with fellow amateurs. Whilst these are valuable resources, College courses incur a charge, and may involve travel, and Training at Radio clubs is limited by the presentations that volunteers can provide. One recent phenomenon, that has arisen with the rapid evolution of the internet is that of the MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) There are many organisations that offer free self-paced training courses that cover a multitude of topics.
